Halcyon smyrnensis
White-throated [Smyrna] kingfisher / Smyrnakungsfiskare

There are three kingfishers in Israel: the European kingfisher, the Pied kingfisher and the White-throated kingfisher (also called the Smyrna kingfisher). I had photographed the first two, but lacked the third. At first, we therefore searched intensively for this particular kingfisher, the notably largest of the three. On March 5, it happened - I shouted out loudly when I discovered the first White-throated kingfisher. Afterwards, however, we saw it several times over the next few days in northern and central Israel. We saw this individual in the Hula Nature Reserve. The photo clearly shows the blue back and the brown body (but only suggests the white throat that has given it its English name).
