This is a female of the Green-winged pytilia. It lacks the male's orange-red forehead and throat. The head is grey but the bill has some of the male's red bill colour. The species lives in the undergrowth, e.g. in low thorn bushes and rarely comes down to the ground. The menu consists of grass seeds and insects. They are monogamous. The nest is built of grass blades and decorated with feathers. The female lays between four and six white eggs. Both sexes help incubate the eggs. When the chicks have hatched, the parents feed them almost exclusively with insects. When they get a little older, the menu is expanded to include grass seeds. The Green-winged pytilia has been popular as a cage bird for a long time.
