Compared to the European magpie (Pica pica), this species has a stronger bill and a black rump. Its Latin name indicates its limited distribution: "Bhutanese magpie". It thus occurs in Bhutan but also northeast of the country, in China.
Jämfört med den europeiska skatan (Pica pica) har denna art en kraftigare näbb och en svart gump. Dess latinska namn indikerar dess begränsade utbredning: "bhutanesisk skata". Den förekommer alltså i Bhutan men även nordost om landet, i Kina.
