That this spectacular bird would belong to the family of 'gray birds' (Campephagidae) sounds like pure irony - but that's the way it is... (Most of its relatives are in fact fairly gray). Although it looks like a small flycatcher, it is surprisingly large (20-22 cm). This is the male which is jet black and scarlet - the female, however, is yellow where the male is red and grayish instead of black. Characteristic of this species is the red field on the wing.
