This is a relatively large hornbill (90–100 cm) with spectacular color difference between the sexes. This is a female that is black on the head and underside while the male is orange. Both sexes have pale yellow bills with a row of vertical, dark lines on the upper half of the bill, blue bare skin around the eye, red larynx and almost no casque. The bill halves are mostly barbed and almost look like they have been worn hard - probably effectively for holding fruits that are part of the species' diet. The species is threatened due to hunting and deforestation. Perhaps there are now only 7,000 individuals left in the entire distribution area. The Rufous-necked hornbill often appears in pairs and this picture and the following (of the male) were taken on the same occasion. They were foraging only 50 yards apart.
