A "must" in Bharatpur is to see the region's pride: the Sarus crane. But they are rarely found in the national park and we never saw any there either. However, Bablu had an idea where we could see them, and we went out into the countryside, to suitable places. And on two of them we managed to see Sarus cranes, once a couple with an almost full-grown chick, and then a couple looking for food in a rice field. Here the male, on the right, is slightly larger than the female. This is the world's largest crane with a length of up to 180 cm (5.9 ft) - thus also the world's tallest flying bird. Primarily a resident bird, it is found only in northern India and a few places in Southeast Asia. In India, Sarus cranes are regarded as symbols of long, faithful marriages. The couple stay together for life and if one partner dies, the other is considered to starve itself to death out of grief!
