This little songbird appeared in one of the parks we visited in Greater Los Angeles, a Hutton's vireo. I was extra delighted because it was the first vireo I have ever been able to photograph. Vireos occur only in America and this species only in an extremely narrow belt along the Pacific coast from British Columbia to Guatemala. (The exception is Mexico where it also occurs more centrally). It is only 12-13 cm long, it is usually a resident bird, but may join (as the only vireo) mixed-species feeding flocks during non-breeding seasons. It has a couple of interesting peculiarities - it builds a hanging cup nest and the spouses share the breeding of the young in solidarity. The female lays the eggs. The spouses take turns incubating. The male takes care of the feeding after the brood has left the nest.
