The wrens consist of 88 different species, of which only one occurs in Sweden or Europe (Troglodytes troglodytes), the rest are found in North and South America. This species, The Cactus wren, which we passed in a mini-reserve next to the University of California at Irving, is the largest wren in the United States. It got its trivial name from the fact that it often builds nests and seeks food in cacti. The diet is varied. It consists mainly of insects, but is supplemented by nectar, seeds, berries and even small reptiles. More than half of the Cactus wrens live in Mexico and the rest in neighboring states in the United States. The Cactus wren is the state bird of Arizona.
