We took a break on a farm that sold soda. We sat down under a fruit tree and soon I discovered that we were not alone. In the foliage there were several individuals of the species Thick-billed euphonia. Euphonia is a genus that only occurs in Central and South America. Previously they were placed in the tangara family, but DNA studies have shown that they are a genus in the finch family. The thick-billed euphonia is a fruit and berry-eating species found in northwestern South America. This individual probably belongs to the subspecies 'hypoxantha'. It is a male - the female is uniformly green and is most easily identified when it occurs in a flock with males.
