The summer of 2018 in Slättåkra (my farm in Småland) became very special because of a couple of redstarts. I was building a library in the barn house and therefore walked by a large maple tree several times a day. Now and then I heard a 'huit'-sound in the tree, accompanied by ticking tones. The first time I thought it was a bird on a visit, but soon I realized that a couple of redstarts had built a nest in a cavity in the maple tree. Over time, I was able to call on the male - and it showed itself fairly close. On a couple of occasions I had guests with me - and it still appeared. Maybe it was worried about the nest - but I interpreted it as friendship. We talked a lot that summer, especially the male and I.
