Not far from the Ewaso Ngiro River, we could follow this woodpecker's food search in an old tree. It turned out to be a male of the African grey woodpecker (the female lacks, as with many woodpecker species, the red on the head). The name in Swedish is "Yellow-bellied ash-pecker" which refers to the fact that it sometimes has a pale yellow patch on the abdomen (sometimes hardly visible at all, sometimes red). In this individual, the abdominal patch was actually stark red, although it is not visible in this picture). This bird was foraging intensively for a long time and occasionally found larvae that it pulled out with its straight bill.
