Down by the water, a large number of birds gathered, including this Rüppel's vulture - one of the largest and most threatened vultures. This is most certainly a juvenile individual, as an adult it will be darker in plumage, almost black and white, and have more blue around the eyes. The Rüppel's vulture is acutely threatened. During the last half-century, it is believed to have decreased by 97%! The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) designates it as "critically endagered" which denotes the stage just before "extinct".
