For me, the Pied avocet is intimately associated with Öland, "my" special bird province of Sweden. But here in Walvis Bay they were more numerous, and I could get closer to them than I ever could in Öland. This picture clearly illustrates how the Pied avocet sweeps back and forth laterally when foraging for insects just below the surface. Here it is on its way up with the bill after having caught an insect.

För mig så är skärfläckan intimt förknippad med Öland, "mitt" speciella fågellandskap. Men här i Walvis Bay fanns de i mängder, och jag kunde komma närmare än någonsin på Öland. Den här bilden illustrerar tydligt hur skärfläckan sveper med näbben fram och tillbaka i sidled när den söker efter insekter just under ytan. Här är den på väg upp med näbben efter att ha fångat en insekt.
