Water thick-knee / Vattentjockfot

The boat glided slowly down the Okavango River; and suddenly this bird was there, in a glade in the reeds, a Water thick-knee. In the picture, you can clearly see the double-folded legs and somehow also get a glimpse of the streaked plumage of the upper side - which clearly distinguishes it from the relative, the Spotted thick-nee (Burhinus capensis), which of course is spotted where this bird is streaked. The question of who was more surprised than the other - the bird or I - as we came so close, is hard to decide ...

Båten gled sakta nedför Okavangofloden. Och plötsligt stod den där i en glänta i vassen, en vilande vattentjockfot. På bilden ser man tydligt de dubbelvikta benen och kan ana den streckade ovansidan - som tydligt skiljer den från släktingen fläcktjockfot (Burhinus capensis). Vem som blev mest förvånad - eftersom vi kom så nära - är väl svårt att avgöra...
