After much scouting among thousands of stones in the river, we were able to spot this Ibisbill, deceptively similar to a stone from a distance. With its red curved bill and black face, this is a very special bird. It is a wader, but with ibis-like features and so different that it is taxonomically placed in a family of its own. Even in its behavior it is odd. It breeds only at high altitudes (1700-4400 m a.s.l.) in southern Central Asia, usually on riverbanks on the Tibetan Plateau. It is therefore extra exclusive to see it. Therefore, Ibisbill was probably a bird that many in our group were eager to see - and this was the only opportunity.
