The woodpecker is relatively similar to its close relative the European green woodpecker (Picus viridis), but it is slightly smaller and has less black around the eye. The mustache line is also thinner. In this picture, the watered wing edges are obscured by fluffy down, otherwise it resembles the European green woodpecker also in that respect. This is a male with a red crest - the female has a grey, striped crest. The Grey-headed woodpecker subsists, like the European green woodpecker, on ants, but has a more varied diet that includes termites, other insects and in some seasons also berries and fruit. It is widely distributed in a semicircle, from Europe, around the Himalayas with a very narrow range in northern India. So I was lucky to be able to photograph both a male and a female right there.
