The Tumbes pewee, also called the Western tropical pewee, in this picture belongs to the large bird family 'Tyrant flycatchers' (Tyrannidae). This is considered the world's largest bird family of around 400 species - even though it is found only in the Americas, from Canada in the north to Argentina in the south. The species vary a great deal in size and color, but several, like this one, remind one of the Old World flycatchers. Like those, they are also insectivores. This pewee is found in dry areas of Ecuador and Peru.
