The Sociable weavers are best known for building huge, communal nests. A whole colony of birds, with hundreds of individuals, can live together in a single, enormous nest. Because building material is added to it every year, it may eventually collapse, felling a big tree just by its weight. The nests we saw on our trip were probably four to six yards wide and must have been weighing several hundred pounds. At one of our rest stops, I was able to get a close up of this curious individual.
