One of the bird species that I was looking forward to seeing in Botswana was Pel's fishing-owl. One of the most reliable biotopes to see it is the Okavango River with its slow flowing water and high trees on the waterfront. This large owl, which is around 25 inches tall and the fourth heaviest of all owls, can catch fishes up to four pounds. We found this individual with the help of our boat captain. He knew about a grove of trees where a fishing-owl almost always spent the day. And there it was, perched high up in a tree. After trying several angles, I got this gap in the greener. Apparently, it had been in a hurry during the night, because the beak does not seem to be properly cleaned...
En av de arter som jag såg fram emot att få se var den afrikanska fiskugglan. En av de säkrare biotoperna för att få se den är just Okavango-floden med dess långsamt flytande vatten och höga träd invid vattnet. Den här stora ugglan, som är drygt 60 cm lång och den fjärde tyngsta ugglan kan ta fiskar upp till två kilo. Den här individen fann vi med hjälp av vår båtkapten. Han visste om en dunge där den nästan alltid höll till om dagen. Och där satt den, högt uppe i ett träd. Efter att ha prövat flera olika vinklar så fick jag den här luckan i grönskan. Tydligen hade den haft bråttom under natten, för näbben är nog inte helt rengjord...
