The summer plumage of the Black guillemot is, as the English name suggests, almost entirely black except a large white wing spot and red legs. When the bird flies, you also see white wing edges. The eyes are dark and the bill is black and pointed. In winter, the color of the head and the underside changes to white. The Black guillemot is about 35 cm tall with a wing span of about 55 cm which make it a medium-sized auk.
Tobisgrisslans sommardräkt är helt svart utom en stor vit vingfläck och röda ben. När fågeln flyger ser man också vita vingkanter. Ögonen är mörka och näbben är svart och spetsig. Vintertid skiftar färgen på huvudet och undersidan till vitt. Tobisgrisslan är ca 35 cm lång med ett vingspann om ca 55 cm.
