The Magnificent frigatebird is not uncommon, but occurs only near the coasts and in tropical climates, e.g. along America's Pacific coast, in Florida, the Caribbean and the Cape Verde Islands. Like most seabirds it subsists on fish and its fishing technique is to fly close to the surface and catch whatever it can reach. Its name, however, reflects a completely different behavior, namely to attack other seabirds, and forcing them to drop their prey. This male has not blown up his gular sac, which it only does when it wants to attract females during the mating season.
