The Bushy-crested horbill rarely seems to deserve its name because most individuals seem to lack the bushy plume on the neck. This is a female. The male has an all-black bill with a small black cap on top, while the female's bill is black at the very end but then turns yellow and the casque is very small. Like some other hornbills, the female burrows into a tree cavity during breeding and is fed by the male and other close relatives.
Plymnäshornsfågeln tycks sällan förtjäna sitt namn eftersom de flesta individer tycks sakna plymen i nacken. Detta är en hona. Hanen har nämligen helsvart näbb med en liten svart kask ovanpå, medan honans näbb är svart längst in men sedan övergår i gult och kasken är mycket liten. Som en del andra näshornsfåglar muras honan in i en trädhåla under häckningen och matas av hanen och andra nära släktingar.
