The Eurylaimidae are a family of birds with unusually colorful species that occur from the eastern Himalayas to Indonesia and the Philippines. We encountered one of them in Sepilok - the Black-and-yellow broadbill. As the picture shows, the bird has more colors than its name suggests. The plumage contains black, white, yellow and pink, complemented by bright yellow eyes and a blue, broad bill! The latter is typical of the Eurylaimidae. The bird occurs in forests in the lowlands and lower mountain regions. It forages by lunging at insects in the air from a perch. The species is distributed from the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra to Borneo. It is considered "near threatened".
