This is a male of a very difficult-to-photograph species, the Black-faced rufous warbler. It lives in rainforest environments where it stays hidden in the dense undergrowth. It is an odd songbird that looks like it has dipped its head and neck in tar. The species shows clear sexual dimorphism, with the male being reddish-brown and the female being olive-grey. The male's call has been likened to the warning sound that usually comes from a truck reversing.
