This is a female of perhaps the strangest of all birds of paradise - the Ribbon-tailed astrapia. Like the spectacular male, it has a bill tuft (but significantly smaller) and some fluorescence on the head, but that's pretty much where the similarities end... The female is mostly dark blue with a cross band on the belly. The species occurs only in the central highlands of eastern New Guinea, in forests between 2,000 and 3,400 meters above sea level.
