The Piping hornbill is the smallest species in the Bycanistes family with its 50 cm. It got its name from its sound, but when you look at it up close, there is another distinctive feature that strikes one: the rough bill! Unlike other hornbills, with one bill more pompous than the other, the bill of the Piping hornbill is nothing to rave about. It looks as if it were adzed roughly, without finesse. I came across this bird in a distant corner of Legon BG. There was a pair, sitting quietly as I approached cautiously. In the end, I got this picture up close before retiring without the birds seeming disturbed
Skriknäshornsfågeln är den minsta arten i Bycanistes-familjen med sina 50 cm. Den har fått sitt namn efter sitt läte, men när man ser den på nära håll är det ett annat särmärke som slår en: den skrovliga näbben! Till skillnad från övriga näshornsfåglar, med den ena näbben mera pampig än den andra, så är skriknäshornsfågelns näbb inget att yvas över. Den ser ut som om den vore grovt tillyxad, utan finess. Den här fågeln stötte jag på i ett avlägset hörn av Legon BG. Det var ett par som lugnt satt kvar när jag försiktigt närmade mig. Till slut fick jag den här bilden på nära håll innan jag retirerade utan att fåglarna verkade störda.
