Gavia stellata
Red-throated loon / Smålom

Although the Red-throated loon (or 'Red-throated diver') breeds in Sweden, it is first and foremost an Arctic bird with a wide distribution, from Alaska in the west to Japan in the east. When it flies, it displays a very characteristic profile, with a low, bent head and hanging feet, a body profile that reminds one of a boomerang. This bird had landed at one of its favorite places, a small freshwater pool on the tundra. But as we came closer, it became worried, flew up and passed just by us.
